Don't get me wrong; I thoroughly enjoyed the first Artemis Fowl book. Still, I can't help liking the second installment better. It's like the first in many ways; the action is as intense, the plot as involved, the characters as fascinating, and the wit as unrelenting. The biggest difference is in the reader's empathy for the title character. For once, Artemis isn't trying to steal anything. Unless you count snatching his kidnapped father from under the noses of the Russian Mafiya as stealing, that is. Artemis Senior has been missing for two years when his son receives the ransom message. Artemis II(now thirteen), fully aware of the danger to himself and to his father, sets out with Butler, his bodyguard, to outwit some of the most dangerous and powerful criminals in the world. Before Artemis and Butler get off the Fowl estate, however, they are detained and detoured by elfin Captain Holly Short of the Lower Elements Police. The fairies are having troubles of their own involving a goblin uprising, some illegal weapons, and several caches of contraband AA batteries. So much the fairy police know. What they don't know is much, much worse. When Artemis and Butler agree to help the LEP in exchange for some assistance on their own mission, they have no idea how big the stakes are or what kind of enemies they'll be making. Or for that matter, what kind of friends.
 Fun fun October 7, 2008
I preferred this to the first. Once again Colfer brings out his marvelous reimagination of Irish mythology to combine it with the technology of a not-too-distant future. It's an hysterical combination, and I have to say that this book brings in more heart than the first, as well as more passion for its loveable characters.

This book is a great read. It leaves off a little after the second one where Artemis has to help the LEP. It's very exciting.
Artemis the Criminal Hero July 12, 2008
This was probably my favorite of the Artemis books. I loved learning so much more about each of the characters. It was fun to read Artemis as the criminal hero rather than just the criminal.
Another Excellent Artemis Fowl June 25, 2008
Purchased the Audio CDs for travel, and just like Book 1, Nathaniel Parker does an excellent job in narrating. If you enjoy Jim Dale (Harry Potter Series), you'll enjoy Nathaniel Park too.
Book 1 picks right up with a ton of adventure and suspense. Like every Artemis Book, it leaves you wanting more.
