Coming-of-Age September 27, 2008 Every time I read this I am amazed at its honesty and harshness. The main character is a girl to be pitied, even as she is strong. I've heard people complain that so many characters are villainized, but that is because Louise is viewing (with surprising fairness) them through her own eyes as she learns to rely upon herself for her own happiness. Along the way, things are revealed to her, against her will, that not everyone is sorted into the concrete concepts of good and evil.
This is a subtle, beautifully written book about the nuances in our lives and our relationships with other people. But it is also about strength and personal courage to be the person you are meant to be.
With combined flavors of psychology, drama, and classic teen angsty, this provides a wondrous delving into a girl who simply wanted to be loved.
Dont bother reading this book August 22, 2008 0 out of 3 found this review helpful
THis book is full of hatred. I couldn't shake the feeling of anger for several days after reading this book. She never askes her sisters forgiveness. Nothing is really resolved. it is a waste of time.
How Young adult fiction should be!!!! July 13, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is the first book I have read by Katherine Paterson but it won't be my last.
This is a great book for anyone who enjoys good writing and has ever found themselves outside of the spotlight. Paterson's writing style is hyptnotic. I felt like I was on the small island off the Maryland coast. She describes the scenery so well I swear at times I thought I could smell the salt in the air.
Her characters all to familiar to most readers, especially those with syblings. "Weeze" is such a compassionate character I could not help but feel bad for her, then root for her to stand up and make something of her life.
It would have been an easy temptation for Paterson to paint the other sister, Caroline, in a bad way so as to hate her like Louise did. But instead she shows the sweet personality of the younger sister in a way that I never felt bad feelings for her, yet I totally empathized with Weeze. That's something that's not easy for a writer to accomplish but Paterson does it with ease.
The title is so clever as it weaves it's way through the book coming full circle in the last chapter.
I love this book, and would encourage anyone who loves fiction to pick it up. This is how young-adult fiction should be!

An interesting read following the trials of a young girl and her struggle to find herself and her place in the world. This is a beautifully written coming of age story sure to instill hope and a little bit of faith in the young reader.
Not worthy of the award January 1, 2008 1 out of 14 found this review helpful
I am totally blown away by the thought of a 14-year-old girl being romantically attracted to and interested in a man old enough to be her grandfather. And all of this just "hit her" when she hugged him? Not very believable to me. Why would something like this be written for children?
