Wagner's DAS RHEINGOLD for kids December 25, 2008 Before you read this read an English translation of the words to Wagner's opera DAS RHEINGOLD. Don't worry, it's very short, you can read it in twenty minutes.
The better you know Wagner, the more of him you find in Oz. Rinkitink singing nonsense while Bilbil pleads with him to stop is a scene out of DIE MEISTERSINGER VON NURNBERG. Not only in Oz--Zog's description of himself in THE SEA FAIRIES is obviously based on part of Hagen's dialogue with his father (the deposed Gnome King!) in GOTTERDAMMERUNG, as is General Guph's line about hating happy people which he uses both on the King and on the First and Foremost Phanphasm in THE EMERALD CITY OF OZ. The line is:
"Gab mir die Mutter Mut, nicht mag ich ihr doch danken, dass deiner List sie erlag: fruehalt, fahl und bleich, hass' ich die Frohen, freue mich nie!"
Best of the Bunch October 12, 2008 Ozma of Oz has always been one of my favorites of the Oz series. I loved seeing Dorothy back in the land of Oz, and her reunion with all her old friends was amazing. I also highly enjoyed her meeting with Ozma, and the friendship there is a really great one. [Also, Glinda! Oh, all the connections to the original Oz book, amazingness :D] Never did like the Nome King, but the challenge set by him was pretty clever, and kudos, kudos, kudos to Billina! Baum's cleverness never dies, as we see with his lunch and dinner pails, the green tin pig-whistle, the Nome king's belt, and the picture on the wall, and you know you're really back in Oz. The thing is, I get the feeling that lots of people don't even know these books exist. They are under the impression that the story of Oz began and ended with The Wizard of Oz, and this is just wrong. There's a whole series of storeis out there, a series everyone should read because it never loses the magic and charm found in the first book, and if anything, just adds to it. LOVE the books, always have, always will, I just wish Dorothy could stay in Oz forever :D
Classic Oz at its best May 5, 2008 My six year old daughter loves the Oz books and this one is no exception. I was hesitant at first to buy a hardbound version of this when I could get a free e-book version on the web. However, the illustrations and the easy to read type are well worth it as my daughter follows along and learns to read.
Best so far February 22, 2008 This is the best Oz book I have read so far with my son. That being said, I have only read 3 as I am going in sequential order. Nonetheless, it is much better than Book 2 and marginally better than the original.
The chief difference between Ozma and the prior two books is a streamlined narrative which focuses primarily on a single event (journey to the Nome King) with a tangible goal (free the royal family of Ev). Excluding the small section on the Wheelers and Lunch Pail trees, the fantasy elements tend more towards the traditional as opposed to Baum's imagination. You can even see a bit of the old "Mountain King" myth in this story. The net effect is that this story is more concise and less tied to the early 20th century than the preceding novels.
Another big change from the second book is a drastic reduction in the turn-of-the-century chauvinism on display in book 2. Jinjur even goes so far as to give her husband a black eye for milking the wrong cow. I am not sure if a double-entendre is intended here or not, but this is light-years away from the housewives in the prior book.
I highly recommend this as a good read to your children before they go to bed.
exciting and funny for all ages November 26, 2007 I've just started reading the Oz books with my 7 year olds sons and this one is so far our favorite. Bill the hen (aka Billina) is a great addition to the cast of characters, as is the Nome King. Each night as I close the book I have two boys begging me to read just one more chapter. Now that's the sign of a good book!
