Archos and General Motors... or a great item made mediocre! November 23, 2008 11 out of 12 found this review helpful
Why is it companies make such bad decisions? Don't the companies decision makers get paid 6 figure salaries? Yes, I have an Archos 7. Here is a run down from boot up: You have to register and create and account with Archos to be able to use the Web and Web Radio(?)"plug-in". I now go to the internet to be able to watch episodes of THE OFFICE - it will not play any episodes - you get a blank space with a Flash 9 jpg. The Archos 7/Opera is suppose to support Flash 9 -but it doesn't work on many Flash 9 websites. Well -on to YouTube -YES it plays YouTube videos and very nicely I might add! I click on a The Office video... it says can not play this video -you need to download the "Podcast AAC" plug-in! So I click on the "Buy" button and I'm taken to a page that says "Coming Soon". I go to the Archos website and after a little of a struggle I find the Buy the plugins page. There is the "Podcast" plug-in FOR $19!!!!! NEXT... I'll try to play some of my dvd movie files on my laptop.. WUPS - I need another plug-in to do this ANOTHER $19 -WOW that added $40 to the $439 I just paid for the Archos 7! Where is the $30 for three plug-ins that everyone talks about -NO WHERE TO BE FOUND. Oh well I'll see if I can buy the "HiDef Video" plug-in -- WUPS - the "Buy" button doesn't say Buy it says "Out of Stock" now that is interesting -a software plug-in that is Out of Stock! They ran out of software! Thats scary -what will that mean in the future? What version of Linux is run on the Archos 5 and 7? Will we be able to install or download different apps of our choosing (like the Nokia N810)? DVR Station will be another $99... WOW... I may be up to $600 if I keep this unit... Now if us little people see the problems so easily (especially the $19 plug-ins CHOKE!!) why can't a six figured salaried idiot make some better decisions about a product that could have such potential to be great? My recommendation don't buy one of these until: 1. Plug-ins are free. Shouldn't this be a no brainer? 2. Flash 9 is completely supported. 3. The add-ons are more reasonably priced. 4. Software for the unit is not "Out of Stock" Don't forget $600 will get you a 15" laptop!
Big, but great November 13, 2008 5 out of 7 found this review helpful
I have the Archos 7 320 gig. The huge hard disk means I no longer have to worry if all my stuff will fit. I've never yet - it's only a month - had any problem at all with it - web surfing great, unbox works perfectly. They all work just fine. Picture is quite good and the sound level is high enough so you don't need earphones. I've even figured out a way to convert Itunes video. The wifi is neat - the other day it asked me if I wanted to upgrade my firmware - I said yes - and it did so with no connection to anything. Apparently, the battery is removable, but since I haven't seen anything from Archos about this, I haven't tried. It lasts for at least 3 movies, but it takes a while to charge it fully. The touchscreen lets you associate a click with each tap, is easy to use, simple to understand, and really works. Drawbacks - it does take fingerprints easily, but not badly enough so that it's more than a minor matter. Actually, the touchscreen really doesn't get at all smeared - unless of course you've been eating fried chicken with your hands (the only way to do it.) It's larger and heavier than any music/video player/recorder of which I know, but it fits into the inside pockets of a sports jacket, and the stand means that you don't have to hold it. It's not really portable like an Ipod or a 605, but it's not really made for that kind of portability. All-in-all a 9.5/10. Anyone who's seen it has lusted for it.
Exactly what I wanted, no problems in a week November 5, 2008 7 out of 10 found this review helpful
I have the 605 WiFi 160 for travel, and love it. But the Archos 7 is a much better size for video obviously, in situations where you have room for it. I also travel with a Kindle. I put my Archos 7 in a Kindle slipcase, it leaves 1" of space at the top where I put my earphones. Both of those fit in a small sort of manbag that I keep with me on the plane when I put my carry-on overhead.
I have the 7 completely full with movies and TV shows (whole seasons) I never had time to watch, and many hundreds of MP3s. (Likewise with my Kindle, which has dozens and dozens of books). I could be stranded forever on airplanes and in airports and never run out of entertainment.
I do also carry the biggest capacity external lithium battery that has a USB output (biggest Tekkeon), and both AC and DC chargers for it and the other two devices. That fits in my manbag thing too. Barely.
I've been very pleased with the 7's performance, and have had no problems of any kind. I hope it stays that way, but I never had any problems with any of my previous Archos PMPs.
I Love This Thing November 5, 2008 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
I just got both the Archos 7 (320 GB) and the 5 (250 GB) and I love them both. The 5 is slightly larger than my ZUNE and the 7 is slightly smaller than a DVD case. I like having the 7 for when i travel. I no longer have to carry a dvd player and a stack of dvd's with me when I travel out of town. I love the 5 because it is easy to take to class with me. I can record my favorite shows with the dvr station, check my email and surf thge web on the go, and so much more. Both devices have worked flawlessly so far. I will update this post if that changes.

The unit did not work out of the box. The wifi did not work even after upgrading firmware to current version. I believe they sold units before debugged. I plan on waiting and getting once past beta. I think it will be a rocking product once working correctly.
