Really bad idea July 12, 2010 I purchased this toy for my granddaughter at christmas. I beleived the toy would encourage her to read since she loves books. All this toy has done is discourage her love of reading. She refuses to take the toy out of her backpack. She has told me that the toy never works right and does not read the books. I had her bring the toy to me last week. I tried to use the systtem and could not get it to work. I have contacted Leapfrog regarding the pen. I was told to clean the lens. I did as instructed but the pen does not work. Numerous people are complaining about the same thing. I have asked Leapfrog for a refund of my money and I am waiting for their reply.
Despite abuse - Tag Pen still working! May 4, 2010 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I got this for my daughter for Christmas and had grandparents get a bunch of books to go with it. She absolutely loves it. We lost the pen at one point and when it was found I handed it to her, not realizing she was about to explode with the stomach flu, and she barfed all over it. It still worked fine. Last week she dropped it in the toilet. I dried it out in the sun and it still works. Crazy! At this point, if it broke, I would replace it because she completely loves it. I do have a new Mac which isn't partitioned, just using as it is out of box and it works fine with downloading the books. You can put books on the pen prior to purchase so if you know you will likely be getting a book, put it on so you don't have to later. Also the pen tells you the batteries are running out long before they really run out.
not what i expected May 4, 2010 1 out of 5 found this review helpful
i bought this beacause my son loves anything electronic and is starting to read. but i would not have bought it if i had known that the books had little games in them. what a waste of my time and money! who ever decided to add games was an idiot! because there are games my son wanted nothing to do with the reading part. i sure thought it was called tag reading system, not tag game system. if i wanted games i would have bought something else. i am sending it back
One of the best investments we have made all year May 3, 2010 One of the best investments we have made all year, LeapFrog's Tag Reading System is an Anya Favorite.
A little on the pricey side, but well worth it. Your little one will have a blast touching the pages with his/her Tag and hearing the story played through the pen. There are also a ton of other tid-bits buried in these books: games, reading assistants, the actual character voices.
LeapFrog Tag Reading System (Pink) (32 MB)We decided to actually purchase the Tag instead of the LeapFrog Tag Junior Book Pal because of the "test run" at Wal-Mart. Anya was much more interested in the pen than the little ball of the Tag Junior. The Tag is recommended for ages 4 - 8, whereas the Tag Junior is for 24 months to 4 years. I know a lot of parents want to age their child, buying advanced toys for little toddlers that aren't ready for them, and I usually try not to do this (usually a waste of money, because they lose interest quickly on these toys) but for this one I made an exception. She can't use all the functions cognizantly, but she enjoys holding the pen and clicking on words and pictures. I believe she will grow into the functions of the pen.
Not to mention this baby worked very easily with my MacBook - added bonus!
This company has really gone down hill! April 4, 2010 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
I had always been very pleased with Leap Frog products until the last year. I purchased a Tag Reader for my oldest daughter and a Tag Junior for my youngest daughter. The Tag Junior works fine, but the Tag Reader is a complete piece of junk. It will not accept any books except for The Cat in the Hat one that came with the device. I've tried everything. I even thought it might be a problem with the books so I loaded one of the Tag Junior books that work fine and that didn't work either. I tried taking The Cat in the Hat off and then it does not recognize any of the other stories. It only took me a few minutes to set up the Tag Junior and the regular Tag Reader is still not working. I'm sending it back to Leap Frog with a letter. They can keep their junk. This is the second expensive item in the past year we have received from them that does not work properly. Another item we had problems with is the Click Start Computer--it never worked properly. We also had a Leapster that quit after only a few months.
My kids already love to read books so I'm not sure how much educational value this toy has at all. It seems to take the imagination out of reading. My youngest daughter will look at the pictures and make up the story with a regular book, but with this toy the imagination is gone because it makes the noises and reads the story for you. This combined with it not working make me a very unsatisfied Leap Frog customer. I have a useless Click Start, a useless Leapster, and now a useless Tag Reader. My family is done with Leap Frog until they take care of the quality control issues.
