Top notch crime fiction January 2, 2009 This follow-up novel to "The Lincoln Lawyer" is as good or better than the first book. Lawyer Mickey Haller is here connected with LAPD detective Harry Bosch from the author's other series. The plot is complicated but easy enough to follow. Haller inherits a law practice from a murdered lawyer, a practice that includes a high-profile murder case involving a haughtt Hollywood producer, accused of killing his wife and her lover. Something is wrong with the case, and the plot revolves around that.
The characters are exceptionally well drawn. The atmosphere is realistic. The only missing element is a wisp of humor, such as one always sees in Lawrence Block and Donald Westlake crime fiction. A laugh or two might have been welcome here as the action is very intense.
The pace picks up when the case goes to trial and the speed increases to a slam bang finish. I doubt that few hardcore crime fiction readers will be able to predict the grand finale, with its suprise upon surprise.
This is a gem, and Michael Connelly has written several. It doesn't have the sadism and multiple murders one sees in James Patterson crime novels, but it does have intelligence and unpredictable results.
Enjoyable but Misleading January 2, 2009 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I was bummed because when I read the summary, I though that this would be a Bosch/Haller showdown, when it was only Haller in center stage and Bosch was the supporting actor. It should've been informed as a Haller book :(.
I expected more interaction between the two. And to be honest, I always prefer the detective/crime solving life of Bosch more than the life of Haller as a lawyer and the drama at the court. The book did move fast. The case solving is something I have watched over at one of the CSI:NY episodes, so it's not really ground breaking. It was okay but not really a favorite of mine, even if I enjoy Haller's adventure.

M. Connelly's two main carachters (H. Bosch and M. Haller) finally meet, surprises till the very last word!
Grand Slam Legal Thriller December 31, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Michael Connelly's second foray into the legal thriller genre is an amusing, twisting read that will have you ripping through pages one right after the other. There are plenty of good courtroom scenes, great dialogue, and a plot that'll keep your head spinning up until the final page.
Not even the appearance of the serious Harry Bosch amidst the pages can put a damper on the fun read that this book is!
Worthy of a mystery fan's attention December 28, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
This newest Michael Connelly leaves the murder in the background for much of the book while the legal thriller part comes to the foreground--a clever device that hooked me from the very start. And because cynical Mickey Haller is the first-person narrator, we travel along on his personal comeback journey and see his reaction to Harry Bosch's special brand of detective work. Highly recommended for vividly-drawn characters and intricate plotting.
